Humans must colonize other planets: Hawking
Thu Nov 30, 2006 8:45 AM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - Humans must colonize planets in other solar systems traveling there using "Star Trek"-style propulsion or face extinction, renowned British cosmologist Stephen Hawking said on Thursday.

Referring to complex theories and the speed of light, Hawking, the wheel-chair bound Cambridge University physicist, told BBC radio that theoretical advances could revolutionize the velocity of space travel and make such colonies possible.

"Sooner or later disasters such as an asteroid collision or a nuclear war could wipe us all out," said Professor Hawking, who was crippled by a muscle disease at the age of 21 and who speaks through a computerized voice synthesizer.

"But once we spread out into space and establish independent colonies, our future should be safe," said Hawking, who was due to receive the world's oldest award for scientific achievement, the Copley medal, from Britain's Royal Society on Thursday.

Previous winners include Albert Einstein and Charles Darwin.

In order to survive, humanity would have to venture off to other hospitable planets orbiting another star, but conventional chemical fuel rockets that took man to the moon on the Apollo mission would take 50,000 years to travel there, he said.

Fulbright Chair Speaker Series: Mitch Kapor, John Perry Barlow, and John Gilmore

Tuesday, Nov 14, 2006
7:00PM

Join Cory Doctorow, the U.S. - Canada Fulbright Chair in Public Diplomacy, in welcoming Mitch Kapor, John Perry Barlow, and John Gilmore, the founders of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, each a living legend many times over. Kapor founded Lotus and created the popular market for spreadsheets. He now runs the Open Source Applications Forum; Gilmore founded the first dial-up ISP, wrote the world's most widely used compiler, and funds legal campaigns from marijuana law reform to Constitutional challenges to Transport Security Agency regulations; and Barlow is the mad poet who wrote the Grateful Dead's best-loved lyrics and followed that up by penning seminal philosophical documents about the Internet, including the notorious Declaration of Independence of Cyberspace. The three of them have not shared a stage in a decade -- until now.

ABSTRACT

This paper reviews in detail Francisco Varela's work on subjectivity and consciousness in the biological sciences. His original approach to this "hard problem" presents a subjectivity that is radically intertwined with its biological and physical roots. It must be understood within the framework of his theory of a concrete, embodied dynamics, grounded in his general theory of autonomous systems. Through concepts and paradigms such as biological autonomy, embodiment and neurophenomenology, the article explores the multiple levels of circular causality assumed by Varela to play a fundamental role in the emergence of human experience.

Amara Graps talk on Space Water to Earth; 2006 Nov. 06 USC

Physics and Astronomy Colloquium Abstract
November 6
Watering the Earth
Amara Graps
Institute of Physics of Interplanetary Space, Rome - Planetary Science Institute, Tucson
Abstract
AG:
Water is one of the key molecules of life, and a fundamental solvent of our own human life form. The planet that spawned our watery origins, Earth, presently carries enough surface water in vapor or liquid form to cover the entire planet to a depth of about 3 km. The fact that nearly three-quarters of the Earth's surface is covered by seas triggered writer Arthur C. Clarke to question why our planet is called *Earth*, when it could more aptly be called *Ocean*. Driven by our watery origins, we naturally look for other life forms in the universe at the "water hole" (wavelengths 18-21 cm)

"Generally speaking, a molecule becomes ionized if exposed to rough treatment,
and it will recombine if given time to heal its wounds." ----
Hannes Alfvén

Amara Graps:

I am an astronomer in Rome, working on missions that carry INAF's infrared spectrometers. My special interests are circumplanetary dust physics and the origin of water on Earth.

Sometimes, I also write science and engineering-related numerical analysis software and popular science articles for newsletters, magazines, and journals.

Gilles Deleuze conf. today at UCBerkeley, thanks! UC French Dept.!

For Deleuze, the confrontation with chaos deploys the mediums of intelligence, the affect, the percept, function, and the concept. Three autonomous names for the multiple—art, science, philosophy. The ground of their contact and mutual exposure is the simulacrum of ideas, but no idea can appear in a Deleuzian ontology without a material operator by which it is actualized as a variation on the plane of material consistency. A Deleuzian theory of media would ask, “what kind of variation at the level of events is afforded by our material culture?” We must then determine what kind of event is a medium. In keeping with Deleuze’s ontology of immanence we do not align media practice with representation or simulation, only with more or less adequate models of repetition at the level of signals, in short, a propagation of syntax or structural invariants that co-ordinate a space where an event can occur. We must immediately reverse this schema which is necessary for representation but disingenuous to events, which are not predicated on this cultivation of space but erupt continuously as a disarticulating force, the multiple or variable index of forces and relations. A medium is a place of inscription, a possibility of life. The event is not merely a possibility but the actualization of a virtual, which is real but un-mediated. A Deleuzian theory of media must then meet two theoretical and political imperatives: it must enable itself as a structure of registration through which the event can begin to resonate along divergent series (aesthetic, practical, conceptual, technical etc.); it must also propose a kind of historiography of the event which is genealogical, a line of continuous variation that describes the methods of articulating the disorienting violence of the event as it resonates in the heterogenous series.

How is the field of economics dealing with technological change?
This is the interesting thing. Part of the thesis in most of my books critiquing the traditional economics is that they missed the most important driving variable in the whole economic process -the evolution of technology and the unfolding of the Industrial Revolution itself. Which is really all about change. Economic theory considers technology as a given. This is why economics, I’ve always said, is backing into the future looking through the rear view mirror.

Both Marshall McLuhan and Bruce Sterling have said that a good futurist is one who can predict the present. Do you agree?
I think that’s a good way of saying it. There’s another thing about being a futurist, and it relates to personal responsibility for the future. In other words, we are all making the future every minute that we live, by way of our collective and individual decisions. If we think of it like that, everybody is really a futurist....con. at @>>>

EPHEMERALIZATION

Fuller arrived at this concept in 1922 (see Reader, p.16) and devotes a chapter to it in Nine Chains. The term denotes:

"the principle of doing ever more with ever less weight, time and energy per each given level of functional performance". (Synergetics 2, 792.52)

Critical Path (p.232) defines it as:

"the invisible chemical, metallurgical, and electronic production of ever-more-efficient and satisfyingly effective performance with the investment of ever-less weight and volume of materials per unit function formed or performed".

Ephemeralization is a fruit of synergy. (N.B., it has nothing to do with the production of ephemera, as Pawley (p.174) imagines: in one sentence this author manages to misconstrue both of the above key concepts.)

It is an important principle for Fuller because of his concern with performance and resources. Ephemeralization also underlies Fuller's conception of Change Curves, which form a part of his discussions of history.

Computers are obvious exemplifications of ephemeralization. Today's pocketful of computing power was a roomful not long ago. The extreme case of all this is that of Quantum Devices.

Entangled in the Matrix Net

Globe and Mail Update

VANCOUVER — I'm having a Matrix moment. You know the feeling: a vague sinking sensation when reality seems as if it is being simulated inside an enormous computer. A neo-Neo moment.

This week, Google bought YouTube for $1.65-billion. YouTube, in case you've been dead or under a large rock, is the website where you can view videos that people have uploaded to the Internet. Only a little more than a year old, it has the largest library of videos available on the Web. Most of them are pretty silly, but in among the shots of people getting hit in the crotch, and croc hunter Steve Irwin being fatally barbed by a stingray, are some other more curious offerings

McLuhan Marshall Playboy interview from March , "1969"

PLAYBOY: Despite your personal distaste for the upheavals induced by the new electric technology, you seem to feel that if we understand and influence its effects on us, a less alienated and fragmented society may emerge from it. Is it thus accurate to say that you are essentially optimistic about the future?

MCLUHAN: There are grounds for both optimism and pessimism. The extensions of man's consciousness induced by the electric media could conceivably usher in the millennium, but it also holds the potential for realizing the Anti-Christ--Yeats' rough beast, its hour come round at last, slouching toward Bethlehem to be born. Cataclysmic environmental changes such as these are, in and of themselves, morally neutral; it is how we perceive them and react to them that will determine their ultimate psychic and social consequences. If we refuse to see them at all, we will become their servants. It's inevitable that the world-pool of electronic information movement will toss us all about like corks on a stormy sea, but if we keep our cool during the descent into the maelstrom, studying the process as it happens to us and what we can do about it, we can come through.

Personally, I have a great faith in the resiliency and adaptability of man, and I tend to look to our tomorrows with a surge of excitement and hope. I feel that we're standing on the threshold of a liberating and exhilarating world in which the human tribe can become truly one family and man's consciousness can be freed from the shackles of mechanical culture and enabled to roam the cosmos. I have a deep and abiding belief in man's potential to grow and learn, to plumb the depths of his own being and to learn the secret songs that orchestrate the universe. We live in a transitional era of profound pain and tragic identity quest, but the agony of our age is the labor pain of rebirth.

I expect to see the coming decades transform the planet into an art form; the new man, linked in a cosmic harmony that transcends time and space, will sensuously caress and mold and pattern every facet of the terrestrial artifact as if it were a work of art, and man himself will become an organic art form. There is a long road ahead, and the stars are only way stations, but we have begun the journey. To be born in this age is a precious gift, and I regret the prospect of my own death only because I will leave so many pages of man's destiny--if you will excuse the Gutenbergian image--tantalizingly unread. But perhaps, as I've tried to demonstrate in my examination of the postliterate culture, the story begins only when the book closes.

Eric Picard says:

"That's all ending.

Marshall McLuhan envisioned everyone having his own television channel. He was really talking about the Internet's promise -- and that was only a piece of the story. He didn't quite envision the complexity of social networking, and we're only now beginning to see the power that will evolve from the intricate web of connections that are forming and what those will mean. One thing that will become quickly apparent is that if people can share media content that they're passionate about with their personal networks, their friends will consume those media.

Remove the constraints from content distribution, and you suddenly arrive in a strange new world. And as we saw with Napster and the music industry, the entrenched media business doesn't handle sea changes very well. TV is trying. The networks recognize they need to figure out the Internet. My last column discussed financial models the networks should use to sell media over the Internet. But I didn't have time to cover distribution in detail.

Owners of content in all media types have struggled with what open distribution will mean to them. RSS (define) was one of the first technologies to gain wide adoption in content distribution, but advertising support was simply not thought through very well. And as soon as good DRM (define) was available,

Psychedelics Could Treat Addiction Says Vancouver Official

City's drug policy honcho sees 'profound benefits'. A special report.

Vancouver's top drug policy official and B.C. public health physicians believe addicts might be treated by giving them psychedelic drugs, and they hope the city will lead in exploring the controversial approach.

In the late 1950s, New Westminster-based Hollywood Hospital was a leader in therapeutic psychedelics, almost a decade before Timothy Leary encouraged the masses to "turn on, tune in and drop out" on acid. Founded by eccentric American entrepreneur Al Hubbard, Hollywood Hospital catered to a mixed clientele of American celebrities and Canadian politicians given LSD to treat alcoholism, drug addiction and psychological burn-out. For almost a decade after LSD was criminalized in North America in the late 1960s, Hollywood Hospital served up therapeutic LSD before the provincial government pulled funding in 1975 and the hospital closed.

One Canadian Medical Association Journal paper written by University of Toronto professor Harold Kalant in 2001 discussed the varied potentially fatal risks of taking street ecstasy but he added that there was "no evidence" that taking the drug would lead to addiction and even said that the drug "may be of potential value as an aid in psychotherapy" though "similar claims were made earlier for MDA, LSD and other hallucinogens but...no lasting benefit was found in a 10-year follow-up study of patients treated with LSD" and "no comparable study has been conducted on patients treated with MDMA."

The recommendations in the reports by the city of Vancouver and the Health Officers Council of B.C. have also turned on AmericLinkan researchers. "Those reports touch on the vanguard of treatment efforts with substance abuse and are a common-sense approach to drug abuse treatment and harm reduction," said Dennis McKenna, an ethnopharmacologist and psychedelic drug researcher based in Minnesota who plans to return to Vancouver to research Amazonian plants this September at BCIT. McKenna, a "child of the 60s," started sampling psychedelics in the Haight-Ashbury, area of San Francisco, then split for the Amazon to sample psilocybin with his brother Terrence, who detailed their trips in the book True Hallucinations.

Atheism taking off! Sam Harris, Dawkins, Dennett; time to get a "religion" update, upgrade, open source "religion"

A New Take on Atheism: Armed with evolutionary psychology and inflamed by the 9/11 attacks, these authors--Richard Dawkins (left), Sam Harris (center) and Daniel C. Dennett--treat belief in God as a superstition the modern world can no longer afford

The New Naysayers
In the midst of religious revival, three scholars argue that atheism is smarter.
By Jerry Adler
Newsweek
It is not just extremists who earn the wrath of Dawkins and Harris. Their books are attacks on religious "moderates" as well—indeed, the very idea of moderation. The West is not at war with "terrorism," Harris asserts in "The End of Faith"; it is at war with Islam, a religion whose holy book, "on almost every page ... prepares the ground for religious conflict." Christian fundamentalists, he says, have a better handle on the problem than moderates: "They know what it's like to really believe that their holy book is the word of God, and there's a paradise you can get to if you die in the right circumstances.

Several months ago, I mentioned -- in the usual elliptically discursive and maddeningly en passant manner that substitutes for style on this blog (see, even I know it) -- something I'd read in The New York Times Book Review about a book about Leo Strauss. As I recall, the review -- and reportedly the book -- basically said that it was weird that Leo Strauss kept being associated with the neoconservative Bush League in Washington, DC.

But as this is the web I've lately been tangling with, that's probably why Leo Strauss and the American Right recently popped up in my Amazon recommendations. It's by Shadia B. Drury, of whom I'd never heard, so I was somewhat amazed (further demonstrating my deep ignorance of these waters) to find she has a page on Wikipedia. My interest might have ended there, had I not read that she "has called Strauss himself 'a Jewish Nazi'" -- especially as some attentive Wikieditor has added the tag "citation needed." Well goodness, I should say so!

I can't imagine a better way to commemorate the fifth anniversary of 9/11 -- and I can't recommend these films highly enough. You'll see.

Discover the Secret Right-Wing Network Behind ABC's 9/11 Deception (271 comments)

Less than 72 hours before ABC's "The Path to 9/11" is scheduled to air, the network is suddenly under siege. On Tuesday, ABC was forced to concede that "The Path to 9/11" is "a dramatization, not a documentary." The film deceptively invents scenes to depict former President Bill Clinton's handling of the Al Qaeda threat.

In fact, "The Path to 9/11" is produced and promoted by a well-honed propaganda operation consisting of a network of little-known right-wingers working from within Hollywood to counter its supposedly liberal bias. This is the network within the ABC network. Its godfather is far right activist David Horowitz, who has worked for more than a decade to establish a right-wing presence in Hollywood and to discredit mainstream film and TV production. On this project, he is working with a secretive evangelical religious right group founded by The Path to 9/11's director David Cunningham that proclaims its goal to "transform Hollywood" in line with its messianic vision.

Before The Path to 9/11 entered the production stage, Disney/ABC contracted David Cunningham as the film's director. Cunningham is no ordinary Hollywood journeyman. He is in fact the son of Loren Cunningham, founder of the right-wing evangelical group Youth With A Mission (YWAM).

On Beyond Zebra? Minding and Metaprogramming the Evolution of Novel Dissipative Systems

Out of the [lamination of selves], Zebra, which is supra- or trans-temporal, came into existence: pure energy, pure living information.
Valis, Philip K. Dick

This seminar will review the recent history of the life sciences and their re-encounter with mind - from Schrödinger to the present - in the hopes of informing diverse creative practices emerging at the nexus of consciousness and evolution, e.g. biotechnology.

Research and theorization over the past ten years on the thermodynamics of living systems suggests that such living ecologies are teleologically attracted to the increased dissipation of information. Consciousness, once viewed as an evolutionary oddity or epiphenomenon, can now be viewed as an "attention sink" integral to this telos, and can be defined as the perception of the differential thermodynamic futures of implicate ("potential") combinations of ecosystemic interconnections at scales ranging from the cosmic to the quantum. This perception, clustered or "laminated" together in patterns, is'' the unfolding of subjective experience and has transformed the planet, where a "thinking stratum" evolves: biologist V.I. Vernadksy dubbed it the "noösphere." Here collective self reference and its infinite regress emerges, enabling a massive increase in the processing of information: the process becomes holographic in nature, replicating the subjective unfolding of the implicate order in a larger scale dissipative structure of planetary and perhaps cosmic dimensions.

WASHINGTON — President Bush asked Congress Wednesday to approve a new system of military-style justice for terrorism suspects that would, for the first time, permit convictions in American courts based on the use of coerced evidence.

The Bush administration proposal also would permit war crimes convictions based on evidence that was never made available to the accused.

Bush said reliance on such controversial information at trial would be strictly limited, permitted only under a judge's ruling that it was relevant and credible, and that the use of coerced statements would stop short of allowing evidence obtained through torture.

Make sure to check out these articles, and AlterNet's compendium of recent stories on the war profiteers.

The thousands of mercenary security contractors employed in the Bush administration's "War on Terror" are billed to American taxpayers, but they've handed Osama Bin Laden his greatest victories -- public relations coups that have transformed him from just another face in a crowd of radical clerics to a hero of millions in the global South (posters of Bin Laden have been spotted in largely Catholic Latin America during protests against George W. Bush).

Christain Facist Bush, world's leading terrorist

Bush is obviously the world's leading terrorist, enemy of the state who hates America. bin Laden is peanuts compared to Bush. Bush has his finger on the red button which could fire of 10,000 nuclear weapons at once and he has boasted of believing that using nuclear weapons are reasonable. If that doesn't make him the world's leading terrorist than we have a mad man with his finger on nuclear trigger and that is even more frightening.

Bush's Tactics Aid the Terrorists

With the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks fast approaching, President Bush took to the podium Tuesday to speak to Americans about his administration's global war on terror.

Three things can be expected from Bush's speech, according to a new study by three Columbia University researchers: The media will repeat the president's remarks. Public fear of terrorism will increase. And the president's poll numbers will rise.

Those have been the effects of presidential pronouncements on terrorism since the Sept. 11 attacks, according to political scientists Brigitte Nacos, Yaeli Bloch-Elkon and Robert Shapiro, in a report prepared for this month's annual meeting of the American Political Science Association.

Mixed messages on torture

While Bush was defending "tough" interrogation at one press conference, the Army was calling torture useless at another.

By Mark Benjamin

Sep. 07, 2006 | In the war on terror, abusiLinkve interrogations of suspects don't work. You get faulty information. The rough stuff has been proven worthless and should be banned.

Or, harsh interrogation tactics have been a successful and indispensable tool that has generated crucial intelligence to foil terror plots that would have otherwise caused death and destruction inside the United States.

Both versions were true in Washington on Wednesday, depending on whom you asked -- the Pentagon or the White House -- and depending on whether you watched the president's nationally broadcast afternoon press conference or a press conference by a general on a cable channel little seen outside military bases.

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2006/09/07/torture/

"The military intelligence people, when it comes to human intelligence, do it in a much more standardized, regulated way," the general explained. "That is separate from what the CIA and the Special Ops guys do."

"The [new Army] field manual reflects exactly what the conventional senior generals have felt for a long time," concluded the general.

Sace the Internet Day! this is for real!

Net Neutrality Action Day

SaveTheInternet.comBack in June, I stood by my PRO-Net Neutrality decision: to prevent Telecom companies, such as AT&T and Verizon, from controlling the Internet. Since then, I've been closely watching the debate, wondering what's going to happen next.

If you agree with me and countless other Web users, then you may want to take part in Net Neutrality Action Day, to be held on Friday, September 8 at 8 a.m.

SaveTheInternet.com advocates will be visiting all 100 local branches of their state Senators' offices and drop off petitions with 50,000 signatures, asking Senators to make a televised statement about their position on the Net Neutrality issue.

So far, 26 senators are for Net Neutrality; 14 are against it; 4 are "waffling"; and 56 are unknown. Among the senators that want to preserve Net Neutrality are Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), Barbara Boxer (D-CA), and Mark Pryor (D-AR). According to SaveTheInternet.com's list, it appears that Democrats are for Net Neutrality and Republicans are against it.

Derek Wallace, a concerned citizen and Internet user, created this video and MySpace page to publicize this issue. He wants everyone to bring a camcorder, camera or camera phone with them when visiting their local Senate offices and upload the footage to YouTube.com.

If you haven't yet already, you can sign SaveTheInternet's petition. After submitting the form electronically, it will automatically be sent to your Members of Congress.

For more information on the Net Neutrality debate, visit SaveTheInternet.com.

Abstract:
Before its possession became a criminal offense in the United States, the psychedelic compound LSD-25 was given to engineers and designers to break "creative logjams" and promote innovation in the Cold War United States. In the late 1950's and early 1960's, for example, the Ampex Corporation(inventor of the Video Tape Recorder) studied the effects of LSD on their engineers, and the result was a growing body of literature and data on psychedelic regimens and their effects on technical innovation.

These regimens included precise and intensive algorithms for psychedelic experience such as the epigraph above – although essentially ineffable, psychedelic experience was treated as fundamentally and essentially programmable. This talk will offer an historical, evolutionary and ecological framework for comprehending and evaluating recent claims by innovators such as Mitch Kapor (Lotus, spreadsheets), Mark Pesce(Virtual Reality Markup Language) and Kary Mullis (Polymerase Chain Reaction) that psychedelics played an integral role in the invention of their breakthrough information technologies. Given the importance of programming to psychedelic experience, the talk will suggest that psychedelic adjuncts were useful to engineers and scientists less because they "expanded" consciousness than because they trained subjects in practices of focused attention.

Hack Attack: Become a Gmail master

gmail-inbox.png

by Adam Pash

Gmail is hands-down the best web-based email service on the 'net. Conversation threads, search, tagging, and keyboard shortcuts have completely revolutionized the way I look at my inbox. I manage all of my email from my personal Gmail inbox, including the daily flood of Lifehacker messages. At this point, I can't imagine a program I could use to manage my email any more efficiently.

Despite my undying love for Gmail, there are still a lot of people who aren't won over by sheer enthusiasm alone, and still others who just aren't taking full advantage of the features and functions they've got at their fingertips in Gmail. Either way, the only thing a Gmail naysayer needs is a better understanding of everything you can do with Gmail.

War and Globalization - The Truth Behind September 11

In this lecture by Michel Chossudovsky, he blows away the smokescreen put up by the mainstream media, that 9/11 was an attack on America by "Islamic terrorists". Through meticulous research, he has uncovered a military-intelligence ploy behind the September 11 attacks, and the cover-up and complicity of key members of the Bush Administration.

According to Chossudovsky, the "war on terrorism" is a complete fabrication based on the illusion that one man, Osama bin Laden, outwitted the $40 billion-a-year American intelligence apparatus. The "war on terrorism" is a war of conquest. Globalisation is the final march to the "New World Order", dominated by Wall Street and the U.S. military-industrial complex.

September 11, 2001 provides a justification for waging a war without borders. Washington's agenda consists in extending the frontiers of the American Empire to facilitate complete U.S. corporate control, while installing within America the institutions of the Homeland Security State.

Pronoia World of Rob Brezsny

Pronoia World of Rob Brezsny

story about Brezsny:
Berkeley: 'Pronoia' invites surrender to the unfathomable

- Rick DelVecchio, Chronicle Staff Writer
Friday, October 7, 2005

Rob Brezsny says the apocalypse is now, so let's dance.

"We are in fact living through the apocalypse," the San Anselmo astrology columnist-author-musician declares in his radically optimistic self-help bible, "Pronoia Is the Antidote for Paranoia: How the Whole World Is Conspiring to Shower You With Blessings," (North Atlantic Books/Frog Ltd., Berkeley, 296 pages, $19), a surprise top-1,000 seller on Amazon.com.

The book rotates, something like a Tibetan prayer wheel, around the idea that love underpins being and that it's ours if only we have the courage to take it. If we don't go to this original and endless source, then we inherit the classical hell-on-earth of depression, decay and destruction.

Around and around his theme the verbally acrobatic, mystically literate Brezsny lets fly a thousand zingers, each with the feel of having been carved with some poetic effort to express a hard reality instead of a platitude.

Love is Brezsny's prescription. Love smarter, love till it hurts. Up the ante on love. Take chances to express it through intimacy, dialogue and work. Express it sexually, intellectually, artistically, meditatively, socially.

"Again and again over the years," Brezsny writes, "you're pushed to a brink that challenges you to either rise to the occasion or else surrender to demoralizing chaos. The crises may come in the form of divorce or illness or job loss, or even in less dramatic events like a misunderstanding with a friend or the inexplicable waning of a once-passionate dream.

"Seeded inside each of these personal turning points is the crux of the evolving global apocalypse: You get to choose whether you'll adjust by taking a path that keeps you aligned with the values of the dying world or else a path that helps you resonate with what's being born.

"In effect, you get to vote, with your entire life," he writes, "for which aspect of the apocalypse you want to predominate."

decay of knowledge Alvin toffler on new economies in NPQ>

http://www.digitalnpq.org/archive/2006_summer/02_toffler.html
Above all, the emerging new civilization is a civilization of choice.

choice in religion _ see T. Leary>

Monogamy won’t go away, but polygamy may gain wider acceptance.
that's PolyAmory!

Kenichi Ohmae, the Japanese management expert, calls cyberspace “the new continent” where entrepreneurial explorers are seeking—and making—their fortunes.

Toffler | Absolutely, this is another aspect of the “third job.” In an information-based system, everything is out there. Some consumer advocates are already starting to demand payment for the sale and use of their personal information, whether revealed by their purchases at the supermarket or a visit to a Web site.

All this is just the beginning. We are going to see an explosion of unpaid work. Soon there will be 1 billion people over 60. They will be using new technologies, from self-diagnosis to toilet urinalysis, to do for themselves what doctors used to do.

This acceleration can transform current knowledge into what we call “obsoledge”—outdated information—overnight. Time and the rapid decay of knowledge are very much related in an information society.

Toffler | One of the key problems in the world today is de-synchronization—“the clash of speeds” between the old, lumbering mass system and the new diversity, flexibility and acceleration demanded of institutions built on knowledge. They are out of sync.

Toffler | What we saw on the streets of Paris was “wave conflict”—the conflict that arises from the shift out of a “second wave” mass society to a “third wave” knowledge society; it is a battle between those who benefit from the old system and those who would benefit from the new.

It is the small states—Finland or Ireland, for example—that are in sync with the revolution now under way. NPQ |

Psychedelic ReSearch takes off in vancouver, B. C. , long history of dosing

How 500,000 frozen embryos are forcing us to rethink life, choice, and reproductive freedom

Aanis Elspas is a mother of four. Unlike most parents, she had three of her children simultaneously. The nine-year-old triplets were born in 1997 after Elspas underwent a series of in vitro fertilization treatments for infertility. Her oldest child, 10, is the happy result of a prior ivf treatment round. Elspas worked hard to get her children, and is grateful to have them. But four, thanks very much, are plenty. psychedelics have always played well by Mark Morford

But let us sidestep the face-slapping obviousness. Let us look past the fact that you are meant to react to this study's findings like it's some sort of revelation, like it doesn't merely reinforce roughly 10 thousand years of evidence and modern research and opinioneering and responsible advocacy by everyone from Timothy Leary to Terence McKenna to Huston Smith to the Tibetan Book of the Dead with yet another study to add to the pile in the Science of the No Duh.

Ah, but then there's the third way. This is to suggest that it's exactly the other way around, that perhaps at least some of us are, as Leary and his cosmic cohorts have suggested for decades, just inches from the celestial doorway, already on the precipice of realizing that we are, in fact, the divine we so desperately seek. Problem is, we can't see the edge through the tremendous fog of consumerism and conservatism and quasi-religious muck.

But even so, every now and then we manage to take a tiny, unconscious, clumsy step ever closer to the edge, stumbling toward ecstasy without really knowing or understanding that we're doing so. And ultimately, sly entheogens like psilocybin are merely nature's way of clearing the fog for a moment, of letting us know just how close we are by smacking us upside the scientific head and tying our cosmic shoelaces together. And doesn't that sound like a fascinating way to spend the weekend?

cloud of toxic depleted uranium from weapons in Lebanon?

http://www.cadu.org.uk/

No danger from uranium cloud? (not!)
By Jean Christou

CYPRUS IS not in danger from a cloud of toxic depleted uranium from weapons allegedly being used by Israel against Lebanon, Health Minister Charalambous Charalambous said yesterday.

Charalambous, responding to reports, and to a warning from the Green Party of the danger to Cyprus, said the threat was hypothetical.

He said however that his Ministry was well prepared to face up to such a situation in case the theoretical threat turned into a potential threat to Cyprus.

Depleted uranium is a chemically toxic and radioactive heavy metal used particularly in armour-piercing ammunition. They burn up on impact, creating a radioactive dust, the effect of which remains the subject of safety debates. Like other heavy metals, DU is toxic and constitutes a health risk independent of any residual radioactivity.

Amnesty International (AI) has called on all governments to consider refraining from the transfer and use of DU weapons. "
