Atheism taking off! Sam Harris, Dawkins, Dennett; time to get a "religion" update, upgrade, open source "religion"

Illustrations by David Johnson for Newsweek
A New Take on Atheism: Armed with evolutionary psychology and inflamed by the 9/11 attacks, these authors--Richard Dawkins (left), Sam Harris (center) and Daniel C. Dennett--treat belief in God as a superstition the modern world can no longer afford

The New Naysayers
In the midst of religious revival, three scholars argue that atheism is smarter.
By Jerry Adler
Newsweek
It is not just extremists who earn the wrath of Dawkins and Harris. Their books are attacks on religious "moderates" as well—indeed, the very idea of moderation. The West is not at war with "terrorism," Harris asserts in "The End of Faith"; it is at war with Islam, a religion whose holy book, "on almost every page ... prepares the ground for religious conflict." Christian fundamentalists, he says, have a better handle on the problem than moderates: "They know what it's like to really believe that their holy book is the word of God, and there's a paradise you can get to if you die in the right circumstances.

Well, I finally got a new podcast published. As promised, I’ve included a few sound bites from this year’s Palenque Norte lectures at Burning Man. In order to get this online in a hurry, I used cuts from some poor quality cassette tape recordings I made during the talks. Before another week is up I plan on having the first of the higher quality recordings in podcast format. . . . Right now I’m still recovering (and cleaning my camping gear) from a week in the Black Rock Desert. . . . Stay tuned, as they say. :-)

Several months ago, I mentioned -- in the usual elliptically discursive and maddeningly en passant manner that substitutes for style on this blog (see, even I know it) -- something I'd read in The New York Times Book Review about a book about Leo Strauss. As I recall, the review -- and reportedly the book -- basically said that it was weird that Leo Strauss kept being associated with the neoconservative Bush League in Washington, DC.

But as this is the web I've lately been tangling with, that's probably why Leo Strauss and the American Right recently popped up in my Amazon recommendations. It's by Shadia B. Drury, of whom I'd never heard, so I was somewhat amazed (further demonstrating my deep ignorance of these waters) to find she has a page on Wikipedia. My interest might have ended there, had I not read that she "has called Strauss himself 'a Jewish Nazi'" -- especially as some attentive Wikieditor has added the tag "citation needed." Well goodness, I should say so!

I can't imagine a better way to commemorate the fifth anniversary of 9/11 -- and I can't recommend these films highly enough. You'll see.

Discover the Secret Right-Wing Network Behind ABC's 9/11 Deception (271 comments)

Less than 72 hours before ABC's "The Path to 9/11" is scheduled to air, the network is suddenly under siege. On Tuesday, ABC was forced to concede that "The Path to 9/11" is "a dramatization, not a documentary." The film deceptively invents scenes to depict former President Bill Clinton's handling of the Al Qaeda threat.

In fact, "The Path to 9/11" is produced and promoted by a well-honed propaganda operation consisting of a network of little-known right-wingers working from within Hollywood to counter its supposedly liberal bias. This is the network within the ABC network. Its godfather is far right activist David Horowitz, who has worked for more than a decade to establish a right-wing presence in Hollywood and to discredit mainstream film and TV production. On this project, he is working with a secretive evangelical religious right group founded by The Path to 9/11's director David Cunningham that proclaims its goal to "transform Hollywood" in line with its messianic vision.

Before The Path to 9/11 entered the production stage, Disney/ABC contracted David Cunningham as the film's director. Cunningham is no ordinary Hollywood journeyman. He is in fact the son of Loren Cunningham, founder of the right-wing evangelical group Youth With A Mission (YWAM).

On Beyond Zebra? Minding and Metaprogramming the Evolution of Novel Dissipative Systems

Out of the [lamination of selves], Zebra, which is supra- or trans-temporal, came into existence: pure energy, pure living information.
Valis, Philip K. Dick

This seminar will review the recent history of the life sciences and their re-encounter with mind - from Schrödinger to the present - in the hopes of informing diverse creative practices emerging at the nexus of consciousness and evolution, e.g. biotechnology.

Research and theorization over the past ten years on the thermodynamics of living systems suggests that such living ecologies are teleologically attracted to the increased dissipation of information. Consciousness, once viewed as an evolutionary oddity or epiphenomenon, can now be viewed as an "attention sink" integral to this telos, and can be defined as the perception of the differential thermodynamic futures of implicate ("potential") combinations of ecosystemic interconnections at scales ranging from the cosmic to the quantum. This perception, clustered or "laminated" together in patterns, is'' the unfolding of subjective experience and has transformed the planet, where a "thinking stratum" evolves: biologist V.I. Vernadksy dubbed it the "noösphere." Here collective self reference and its infinite regress emerges, enabling a massive increase in the processing of information: the process becomes holographic in nature, replicating the subjective unfolding of the implicate order in a larger scale dissipative structure of planetary and perhaps cosmic dimensions.

Bush's Plan Allows Coerced Evidence

Convictions could also be based on material unseen by the accused. The Senate may object.

WASHINGTON — President Bush asked Congress Wednesday to approve a new system of military-style justice for terrorism suspects that would, for the first time, permit convictions in American courts based on the use of coerced evidence.

The Bush administration proposal also would permit war crimes convictions based on evidence that was never made available to the accused.

Bush said reliance on such controversial information at trial would be strictly limited, permitted only under a judge's ruling that it was relevant and credible, and that the use of coerced statements would stop short of allowing evidence obtained through torture.

Pentagon Spends Billions to Outsource Torture

The thousands of mercenary security contractors employed in the Bush administration's "War on Terror" are billed to American taxpayers, but they've handed Osama Bin Laden his greatest victories -- public relations coups that have transformed him from just another face in a crowd of radical clerics to a hero of millions in the global South (posters of Bin Laden have been spotted in largely Catholic Latin America during protests against George W. Bush).

Bush is obviously the world's leading terrorist, enemy of the state who hates America. bin Laden is peanuts compared to Bush. Bush has his finger on the red button which could fire of 10,000 nuclear weapons at once and he has boasted of believing that using nuclear weapons are reasonable. If that doesn't make him the world's leading terrorist than we have a mad man with his finger on nuclear trigger and that is even more frightening.

Bush's Tactics Aid the Terrorists

With the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks fast approaching, President Bush took to the podium Tuesday to speak to Americans about his administration's global war on terror.

Three things can be expected from Bush's speech, according to a new study by three Columbia University researchers: The media will repeat the president's remarks. Public fear of terrorism will increase. And the president's poll numbers will rise.

Those have been the effects of presidential pronouncements on terrorism since the Sept. 11 attacks, according to political scientists Brigitte Nacos, Yaeli Bloch-Elkon and Robert Shapiro, in a report prepared for this month's annual meeting of the American Political Science Association.

Mixed messages on torture

While Bush was defending "tough" interrogation at one press conference, the Army was calling torture useless at another.

By Mark Benjamin

Sep. 07, 2006 | In the war on terror, abusiLinkve interrogations of suspects don't work. You get faulty information. The rough stuff has been proven worthless and should be banned.

Or, harsh interrogation tactics have been a successful and indispensable tool that has generated crucial intelligence to foil terror plots that would have otherwise caused death and destruction inside the United States.

Both versions were true in Washington on Wednesday, depending on whom you asked -- the Pentagon or the White House -- and depending on whether you watched the president's nationally broadcast afternoon press conference or a press conference by a general on a cable channel little seen outside military bases.

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2006/09/07/torture/

"The military intelligence people, when it comes to human intelligence, do it in a much more standardized, regulated way," the general explained. "That is separate from what the CIA and the Special Ops guys do."

"The [new Army] field manual reflects exactly what the conventional senior generals have felt for a long time," concluded the general.

Sace the Internet Day! this is for real!

Net Neutrality Action Day

SaveTheInternet.comBack in June, I stood by my PRO-Net Neutrality decision: to prevent Telecom companies, such as AT&T and Verizon, from controlling the Internet. Since then, I've been closely watching the debate, wondering what's going to happen next.

If you agree with me and countless other Web users, then you may want to take part in Net Neutrality Action Day, to be held on Friday, September 8 at 8 a.m.

SaveTheInternet.com advocates will be visiting all 100 local branches of their state Senators' offices and drop off petitions with 50,000 signatures, asking Senators to make a televised statement about their position on the Net Neutrality issue.

So far, 26 senators are for Net Neutrality; 14 are against it; 4 are "waffling"; and 56 are unknown. Among the senators that want to preserve Net Neutrality are Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), Barbara Boxer (D-CA), and Mark Pryor (D-AR). According to SaveTheInternet.com's list, it appears that Democrats are for Net Neutrality and Republicans are against it.

Derek Wallace, a concerned citizen and Internet user, created this video and MySpace page to publicize this issue. He wants everyone to bring a camcorder, camera or camera phone with them when visiting their local Senate offices and upload the footage to YouTube.com.

If you haven't yet already, you can sign SaveTheInternet's petition. After submitting the form electronically, it will automatically be sent to your Members of Congress.

For more information on the Net Neutrality debate, visit SaveTheInternet.com.

Abstract:
Before its possession became a criminal offense in the United States, the psychedelic compound LSD-25 was given to engineers and designers to break "creative logjams" and promote innovation in the Cold War United States. In the late 1950's and early 1960's, for example, the Ampex Corporation(inventor of the Video Tape Recorder) studied the effects of LSD on their engineers, and the result was a growing body of literature and data on psychedelic regimens and their effects on technical innovation.

These regimens included precise and intensive algorithms for psychedelic experience such as the epigraph above – although essentially ineffable, psychedelic experience was treated as fundamentally and essentially programmable. This talk will offer an historical, evolutionary and ecological framework for comprehending and evaluating recent claims by innovators such as Mitch Kapor (Lotus, spreadsheets), Mark Pesce(Virtual Reality Markup Language) and Kary Mullis (Polymerase Chain Reaction) that psychedelics played an integral role in the invention of their breakthrough information technologies. Given the importance of programming to psychedelic experience, the talk will suggest that psychedelic adjuncts were useful to engineers and scientists less because they "expanded" consciousness than because they trained subjects in practices of focused attention.

Hack Attack: Become a Gmail master

gmail-inbox.png

by Adam Pash

Gmail is hands-down the best web-based email service on the 'net. Conversation threads, search, tagging, and keyboard shortcuts have completely revolutionized the way I look at my inbox. I manage all of my email from my personal Gmail inbox, including the daily flood of Lifehacker messages. At this point, I can't imagine a program I could use to manage my email any more efficiently.

Despite my undying love for Gmail, there are still a lot of people who aren't won over by sheer enthusiasm alone, and still others who just aren't taking full advantage of the features and functions they've got at their fingertips in Gmail. Either way, the only thing a Gmail naysayer needs is a better understanding of everything you can do with Gmail.

War and Globalization - The Truth Behind September 11

In this lecture by Michel Chossudovsky, he blows away the smokescreen put up by the mainstream media, that 9/11 was an attack on America by "Islamic terrorists". Through meticulous research, he has uncovered a military-intelligence ploy behind the September 11 attacks, and the cover-up and complicity of key members of the Bush Administration.

According to Chossudovsky, the "war on terrorism" is a complete fabrication based on the illusion that one man, Osama bin Laden, outwitted the $40 billion-a-year American intelligence apparatus. The "war on terrorism" is a war of conquest. Globalisation is the final march to the "New World Order", dominated by Wall Street and the U.S. military-industrial complex.

September 11, 2001 provides a justification for waging a war without borders. Washington's agenda consists in extending the frontiers of the American Empire to facilitate complete U.S. corporate control, while installing within America the institutions of the Homeland Security State.

Pronoia World of Rob Brezsny

Pronoia World of Rob Brezsny

story about Brezsny:
Berkeley: 'Pronoia' invites surrender to the unfathomable

- Rick DelVecchio, Chronicle Staff Writer
Friday, October 7, 2005

Rob Brezsny says the apocalypse is now, so let's dance.

"We are in fact living through the apocalypse," the San Anselmo astrology columnist-author-musician declares in his radically optimistic self-help bible, "Pronoia Is the Antidote for Paranoia: How the Whole World Is Conspiring to Shower You With Blessings," (North Atlantic Books/Frog Ltd., Berkeley, 296 pages, $19), a surprise top-1,000 seller on Amazon.com.

The book rotates, something like a Tibetan prayer wheel, around the idea that love underpins being and that it's ours if only we have the courage to take it. If we don't go to this original and endless source, then we inherit the classical hell-on-earth of depression, decay and destruction.

Around and around his theme the verbally acrobatic, mystically literate Brezsny lets fly a thousand zingers, each with the feel of having been carved with some poetic effort to express a hard reality instead of a platitude.

Love is Brezsny's prescription. Love smarter, love till it hurts. Up the ante on love. Take chances to express it through intimacy, dialogue and work. Express it sexually, intellectually, artistically, meditatively, socially.

"Again and again over the years," Brezsny writes, "you're pushed to a brink that challenges you to either rise to the occasion or else surrender to demoralizing chaos. The crises may come in the form of divorce or illness or job loss, or even in less dramatic events like a misunderstanding with a friend or the inexplicable waning of a once-passionate dream.

"Seeded inside each of these personal turning points is the crux of the evolving global apocalypse: You get to choose whether you'll adjust by taking a path that keeps you aligned with the values of the dying world or else a path that helps you resonate with what's being born.

"In effect, you get to vote, with your entire life," he writes, "for which aspect of the apocalypse you want to predominate."
